Clemens is walking in the market. It is very busy at this time. the Slaves are buying food for their masters. The bakers are selling plenty of bread. A poet recites his most recently created poem. Although the Pesty Greek merchants are arguing with a local farmer. They both get angrier by the minute. The merchant sticks out his hand demanding the money is handed over. When suddenly the Farmer hits the merchant! In spite of being blamed. The Pompeians laugh at this. the Farmer urges on the Greek Merchants. Clemens hears this and Rushes to the scene. The Farmer Overpowers the merchant and Chaises him out of the Market. When he comes back He is cheered on by the Marketplace.

Clemens listens to the uproar and Hurries. at last the farmer overpowers the Merchant. He chaises them out of the marketplace. Pompeians Praise the farmer.

What exciting lives those old Romans had. Clemens didn’t know that over 2,ooo years later we would still be reading about his exciting life. It was just as well that they didn’t need to worry about really serious things like wars. Just going to the market was enough for them. I suppose you know that in 55BC they all started to emigrate to England, which is why we all speak Latin now. Another interesting and clever thing they managed to do was to know in advance when Jesus was going to be born. How did Julius Ceasar know, when he started to emigrate to England, that it was just 55 years before Jesus was to be born. Very clever.
I remember Latin lessons, In latin the spellings work sensibly. The grammar all follows the same rules- in fact their language was rathe like their army somehow. I got really good at using the vocal index in the text book I recall.
My Mum taught me what she had learnt in latin. It was great cos no one else knew it – but when I wrote it on the board before the lesson and the master saw it……. Latin is a language as dead as dead can be – first it killed the romans and now it’s killing me! the only other Latin I can recall is Fatibus satibus on the tablenorum. Tableus collapsibus Fatty on the Floorum – another learnt from mothers wartime education – apparently it has the correct grammatical endings………..
