Have just been to the library to replenish my stock of reading matter in readiness for more tranquil hours on the taxi rank. I was disappointed to note on spotting their copy of of the local newspaper, that the front-page headline was not: “New Blog Starts in Windermere!” but a full page spread (with photographs) about somebody in Kendal who was not going to keep chickens on their allotment any more because of complaints about noisy clucking. Honestly, the things that some people think are important. However I have acquired a collection of the letters of Anne Boleyn and an exciting looking book about the possibility of life on other planets, both of which I am very much looking forward to. There is such serendipity to be had in Windermere library if you are prepared to look for it. Also it is warm and friendly with some handy armchairs and they don’t mind the dog coming in, which is an extra bonus. As long as you avoid Early Reading Day For Mums And Tiny Tots  it is a very splendid place to go.

Just be thankful the local paper didn’t have the headline ‘Lurid goings-on in swimming baths changing rooms’ ‘(report by our undercover reporter ‘Pole-the-mole’)’…
