We were supposed to get up early but we didn’t.

The puppies made so much racket that even Mark woke up in the night, and then when we did get up it was to the discovery that the poor dog had had the most unspeakable squirty accident all over the carpet.

Of course it wasn’t her fault so we weren’t cross, or at least we didn’t say the cross things that we thought: but it was not her finest hour. We spent some time cleaning and scrubbing and feeling grumpy before we could retreat back to bed with coffee, and Mark says when the puppies have grown up and left home we will have to get hold of one of those things that steam cleans carpets and restore the entire house back to its reasonably fragrant state. I am looking forward to that moment very much.

We went to the ironmonger’s for some screws for the camper, and Mark bought me some flowers because it is my birthday tomorrow, and we are going to be far too busy doing other things to take any notice of it. I only remembered because the computer told me this morning.

We have got lots of flowers in the house at the moment, it is lovely, I wish I had got round to doing some housework as well, because it makes me feel very contented in my soul to have a clean tidy house full of fresh flowers, but I haven’t. This is due to far too many other interesting things happening in life, when I win the lottery I will employ somebody else to dust and hoover.

When we set off to the camper van we wedged the door open as a precaution so that the tiresome dog could get out in a hurry and have her awful stinky accidents in the garden, I am very glad we didn’t have puppies in January.

The camper van is coming along very nicely, and I spent today sticking carpets to ceilings and pretty flowery vinyl on the walls. It is so nice to be doing it, even when we are at home we are planning and talking about the next things. Mark is inventing a cupboard out of which the DVD screen will slide out sideways on runners, and then pull forward so that we can watch films. I think this is really very exciting indeed.

Today he did wiring, he has put lots of LED lights on little hidden ledges so that they shine up on to the ceiling and make the place look magical, with unexpected light in the dark corners. Today he put them in around the heads of the children’s beds, and we switched them on and off several times, at first to check that they were working, but after that just to marvel at how lovely they looked, and to feel pleased with ourselves, because we have got a camper van with beautiful lights in it, and when it gets an engine as well it will be very splendid indeed.

When we got home the garden was full of dog poo, which was a good sign, because she had obviously been managing to make it outside in time.

After a very few happy moments we also realised that the wedge had come out and the back door had blown shut. In consequence of this it turned out that the living room was full of dog poo as well.

This was a terrible discovery, because we were already late for work and had lots of other things to do like hanging washing up, and Mark looked grim-faced and went out to the shed to make an immovable wedge.

We cleaned and cleaned and lit joss sticks and chucked bicarbonate of soda all over the carpet, but somehow the smell seemed to have lodged inextricably in my nostrils. It is now hours and hours later, and I am at work, but somehow I still have the horrible lingering feeling that it is still there.

We have got to get up early tomorrow because of Speech Day at Lucy’s school, you are supposed to take a picnic but she thought she would rather go to the pub. I was relieved about this because of not wanting to bother messing about with quiches and cooked chicken, but we were supposed to be going home early in order to get up at six o’ clock.

The thing is, I don’t much want to.

The door might have blown shut again.

The picture is me sticking carpet to the ceiling.
